It's only been... okay, I don't want to think how long.

We are preparing to take the beta update page and the beta inbox out of beta with the next code release. We don't have an exact date yet, but this is your last chance to tell us about problems!

To enable the beta versions: go to Beta Features and enable the "new Create Entries" beta test for the new update page and the "New Inbox Page" for the, well, new inbox page.

If this is your first time using the beta update page: nearly everything on it can be adjusted, moved, or removed to some degree. The upper right side of the update form has a " ⚙️ Rearrange Panels" link.

Not every panel is enabled by default! If you don't see something you're used to finding, look in the disabled panels. While in Rearrange mode, you can enable or disable panels, drag them to whatever position you want, and generally customize it to your heart's content.

Once we push the button and switch to the new update and inbox pages for everyone, we cannot keep the old ones available. We are so close to finishing the decade-long "get rid of the undocumented custom templating language from 1996 that no one else uses" modernization project that's been sapping our collective will to live that we can taste it, and we can't convert the old update page and the updated inbox page is the converted version. This is your last chance to alert us of problems. If you let us know after the switch goes live, we'll still fix it, but we can't guarantee how fast. Prevent future problems and test drive them now!

Hi all,

I had to push some code live today to fix something, and that brought with it a couple of new things like if you have two-factor authentication (2FA/MFA) enabled, you got automatically logged out and it is now required to log in. If you don't, you can set it up if you want (you don't have to.)

This also means that if you have 2FA enabled, you will not be able to use 3P clients using your username and password anymore. You should be able to use API keys in most cases, but there's some nuance to that (and tbh, I just am not precisely sure what clients anybody even uses.)

Please do comment if you're seeing anything weird, as per usual, and we'll work on it. Thank you!

It’s not as if anyone could ever really get used to riding a giant tiger, but Adam truly thought he’d at least been getting the hang of it.

Maybe this is what he gets for showing off. There really was no reason for Cringer to rise up onto his back legs and for Adam to thrust his sword into the air like they’re prepping for a freeze frame. Who are they even posing for?

Adam is expecting Cringer’s paws to thud back down to the ground, but they don’t. He seems to keep rising up, even leaning back, and Adam slides right off of his saddle and flails a little as he falls, one hand gripping the sword while the other tries to find purchase in Cringer’s thick green fur. Instead he keeps falling for what feels like way too long, then lands solidly on his ass in a way that makes pain jolt up his tailbone.

“Dude!” Adam admonishes, shaking his head a little and opening his eyes. And then he closes them again in blind panic, because no way. “Dude? Cringer?”

His voice comes out a little meeker than he’d like, and his brow furrows when there’s no answer. Eventually he opens his eyes again, hoping to see the vast and vivid expanse of Eternia in the distance, but no. It’s a city. A basic, boring city that looks more like Oklahoma than Eternia, and Adam scrambles to his feet in a panic.

“No, no, no. Not again,” Adam says with a soft whimper, looking around wildly. He raises one hand to his hair and spins so fast the tails of his loincloth flutter, turning in three complete circles before he has to dart out of the way to avoid a car. Someone wolf whistles out the window and Adam looks down at himself, at the harness and short little skirt, and holds his sword in front of chest with his arms crossed.

That probably looks a little weak. Yeah, sure, everyone else is fully dressed in normal Earth clothes and Adam is in– well, something else, but he should just own it. He’s the Champion of Grayskull and this, apparently, is how a champion dresses.

He probably also shouldn’t cry. Even though he totally kind of wants to cry. There's nothing wrong with crying, obviously. It just doesn't seem like it would be helpful right now. He can’t suddenly be on Earth again. He can’t.

“Getting a jump start on Halloween, huh?” This comes from a guy who looks Adam up and down as he passes, and Adam feels ten years old all over again. He swallows hard and walks into the street again, lifting his sword resolutely toward the sky and looking up at the fluffy clouds like he really means business.

“By the Power of Grayskull, I want to go home!” He shouts, but nothing happens. There is no thunder, no crackle of electricity. He stabs at the sky again, hopping a little. “I really mean it this time!”

Still nothing. Desperate, and still raising the sword, he turns toward a person on the sidewalk. “Have you seen a bird? A big, beautiful bird who looks very wise?” The person quickly shuffles away and Adam huffs, shifting to watch them go while still holding his sword aloft. His arm doesn’t get tired. It never really does when he’s in this form. “Helpful! Thank you!”

[Find Adam freaking out anywhere in the city at whatever time would be most convenient. Think of him as a fluffy little golden retriever puppy that happens to be super jacked. Please tag him! Slow time is okay. ♥]

Step Here.

Beneath the towering mannequin was a circular pad printed with those words. Curious, I pressed my foot down atop the printed facsimile of a foot, and moments later, the statue came alive. Startled, I jolted back, hands raising to protect myself, but the creature moved in a juddering, stationary loop, arms falling and lifting while his feet remained planted to the floor.

It was only a machine.

"Frankenstein's Monster," I read aloud from the card posted at his side. "Two-hundred and seventy-five dollars."

Frankenstein. There were few in Darrow whom I had given that name, and I trusted all of them to keep such knowledge to themselves. This trickery came from where all Darrow's strangeness arose. My life and my shame, made into this parody.

Embarrassment did not come. Fury was a distant memory. Instead, I felt a quiet sadness for this creature, like me and yet so different.

"Why did his creator make his skull so terribly flat?" I wondered, peering up at his unusually shaped head and green skin. Should I be grateful for my appearance?

Uncertain, I moved away from the creature, instead wandering the aisles of the recently opened Phantom Halloween Superstore. The rest of the wares, while cheaply made and grossly abundant, were strange and amusing, and while I was unsettled by my mechanical doppelganger, I found myself lingering.

There were children donning masks, and young adults spiritedly discussing costume ideas, and harried parents arguing over the vast expense of annual "outdoor displays."

"Hey, man, love the costume," I heard, catching the smile of a young man as he hurried past on his way towards the Stockroom. Instead of explaining his mistake, I simply smiled and complimented his shirt, which was adorned with a printing of an unusually hairy man, howling at the moon.

The moment passed, and I was once again alone in my wandering, among so many others preparing for a celebration which I struggled to understand.

Tag your characters in. Other characters can respond to them with confessions and messages made anonymously, ranging from the silly to the solemn. They don't even need to be relevant to the original poster, if you wanna complicate things a step further. (Who among us hasn't had a stranger tell us way too much?) OP and others can then take a crack at guessing who's confessing to what. Tell someone what you'd wanna do to them — positive, negative, what you'd dress them as for Halloween — or a habit of theirs that drives you crazy. Confess to a lie told or a secret kept. Admit you ate that last cookie. Get as weird or dark, as serious or absurd as you want, all IC, of course.

If you'd prefer to use [personal profile] citysecrets, the login info can be found here. Feel free as well to just top level random secrets all on their own, rather than to a name. Go wild!
